About Mingo County

Mingo County is located in southwestern West Virginia.  The western side of the county borders Kentucky and Virginia.  In Mingo County (and in the rest of West Virginia, of course), coal is king!  The folks in Mingo County work hard in the coal mines bringing out the coal that America uses for fuel.  Did you know that over half the electricity generated in the United States comes from burning coal?  We owe the coal miners of West Virginia a great deal of thanks!

Mingo County has a long and colorful history.  Probably one of the most famous things that happened here was the feud between the Hatfields and the McCoys.  This feud went on for decades with family members crossing back and forth between Mingo County and Kentucky with often violent and fatal results.  You can read more about the history of Mingo County at this link:

Tim's webmaster, Charlie, finds it interesting that Tim did a song about Mingo County.  Charlie, coincidentally, does a web site about Coalwood, West Virginia, which is in McDowell County, which just happens to border Mingo County.  As anyone who has read the book Rocket Boys or has seen the movie October Sky knows, Coalwood was the coal mining community where Homer Hickam and the Rocket Boys lived!

You can visit Charlie's web site about Coalwood here: www.CoalwoodWestVirginia.com.

(Charlie notes that McDowell County and Mingo County are old football rivals, so Charlie may not be able to speak to Tim any more! <ha, ha>)
